Character Vs Gimmick A Tale Of Two Short Stories

CHARACTER VS. GIMMICK: A TALE OF TWO SHORT STORIES I have a love/hate relationship with short stories. I’ve written a couple of of them, and some have been revealed. I don’t write plenty of brief tales and since I’ve been publishing with some regularity, I actually have seen maybe 40% of them published, which is a fairly goodâ€"possibly even method better than averageâ€"record of success. But there’s success then there’s success. Based on, “when you write it and it’s printed,” then sure, all of my revealed short tales have been successful. But judged on the standards, “and I’m not embarrassed to have people learn it,” I’ve had a much less “profitable” run. Coming Soon! Once once more, this isn't me being charmingly self-effacing. This is me eager to be nearly as good at this entire writing factor as I can presumably be, and that requires some level of realism and self-critique. Recently, I’ve been exposed to a couple more quick tales than had turn out to be normal for me. I’ve been judging a short stor y contest, I’ve been educating a category that includes weekly writing assignments and since it’s not realistic to ask my students to write down a novel each week these come in the form of short tales, I’ve been reading extra short tales, and I’ve been writing extra of them myself, too. I simply completed one for Darrin Drader and the Monumental Works Group’s upcoming anthology to benefit marriage equality, am busy writing a science fiction story for R.T. Kaelin’s Triumph Over Tragedy project to learn victims of Superstorm Sandy, and I still owe a pulp SF story to Tommy Hancock at ProSe. Busy! This has got me thinking about short tales and what makes them good and what makes them bad. Let’s stipulate, to start with, that you must know the way to write. Short tales require correctly constructed sentences, phrases spelled accuratelyâ€"that type of “element stuff.” But one thing has come to thoughts recently when it comes to my very own work, and that's what I’ve co me to call “Character vs. Gimmick.” As a child I learn plenty of brief stories. I was (and still am) a huge fan of Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, and many other nice practitioners of the form. One of the issues that drew me to the quick story was the surprise ending, the cruel accident. And this is what’s gotten in my means, too. I’ve means too often (and let’s just call it, people: Once is simply too typically) approached a brief story gimmick first then tried to force in some other “ancillary” stuff like characters, theme, plot, and other annoying little details like that. What I ended up with is either the best case scenario by way of that beginning, which is that I never completed the story within the first place. The basic failure mode is that I pressured myself to complete it then forced it on editors who then mercifully turned it away. The third possibility has only, thankfully, occurred as soon as, and that was that one of these gimmick tales was actually printe d. God help us all. Here are a number of examples: I wrote a brief story that I did actually manage to complete in a single sitting at a (a tear rolls slowly down my cheek) Borders cafe a couple of years in the past. The gimmick: We meet a suburban gentleman, a lawyer, and follow his morning routine with increasing “rigidity” until the massive reveal . . . he’s Cthulhu’s lawyer! Yup. There are bits of that story that I actually like. And I assume that’s what led me to send it to some poor, unsuspecting editors, all of whom have had the good sense to send it right back. I was so intent on “the big reveal” in that story that I forgot to provide a crap concerning the character, give him one thing interesting to do, have something like battle . . . it’s just a couple quick scenes, a gory bit, then the massive “guess what” second, which I doubt anyone’s learn far enough to really encounter. One of the to do record gadgets that I keep chopping and pasting into the su bsequent day, then the next week, is “Finish SF cannibals story.” The gimmick: Human house explorers encounter an alien species that practices ritualized cannibalism. In true missionary spirit the human explorers present the aliens the error of their methods, and the aliens promptly turn on them as a brand new food source. This is my anti-missionary polemic by way of “shocker” ending. Who are these human explorers? Why are they there? Why do they interfere? Are all of them on the identical web page? Who are the aliens and why are they cannibals, and why do they turn on the humans? Can’t be bothered with details like that! I really began writing this 3 times, and the last time it was from the viewpoint of the on-board computer. God help me. And then there was the epic fail of the revealed short story “Leviathan” in the (thankfully) out of print Magic: The Gathering anthology The Myths of Magic, which was edited by my friend and comrade-in-arms Jess Lebow. Jess was being good to me when he shouldn’t have. What he ought to have carried out was take me aside and say, “Hey, Phil, learn your story and it TOTALLY SUCKS. Let’s determine tips on how to make it not suck.” I would have gone again to the drafting board. Lest you assume that was simply me blaming Jess for my own failings, it really isn’t. At the heart of the entire thing is me writing to a gimmick again. I was doing a “fantasy tackle Jonah and the Whale,” I assumeâ€"blended in with some sort of anti- or pro-drug message? Something about utilizing restricted resources irresponsibly? I don’t even know what I was pondering, however what I ended up with was a meandering, plotless mess devoid of things like recognizable characters or some extent. I cringe even excited about this story, and the dozen years since its publication has in no way diminished my self-loathing over the whole sordid debacle. Two years later, Jess was putting collectively one other anthology and I begged him for an opportunity to redeem myself. I knew “Leviathan” was awful and I wanted to steadiness the books with Jess, Magic readers, myself, and the universe by doing higher. The result was the story “Song for the Plague Rats” in The Secrets of Magic. This is a kind of tales I really feel good about. First of all, I fell upon Jess’s knowledge of the complicated Magic again-story and forced him to give me parameters that might be significant for Magic gamers. He gave me some good stuffâ€"the primary assembly of two of the setting’s higher-identified characters: a future Planeswalker and the vampire Baron Sengir. As a Magic participant I was conversant in the Plague Rats card and combined that with a dark gothic fantasy take on The Pied Piper. Sounds like the beginning of a “gimmick” story, doesn’t it? Well, it does have a sort of “surprise ending” in the reveal of the young boy as Baron Sengir, however that wasn’t actually what the story was about. The story is a few young girl finding a way to take control of her very miserable life after her household is taken by a plague. I was given the surprise ending, the basic parameters of the characters, however I began with charactersâ€"what they wished, where they came from, their emotional and psychological baggage, their fears and needs . . . and I ended up with a story that I felt actually good about. So why, then, twelve years after the humiliation of “Leviathan” am I nonetheless attempting to drive my means via “SF Cannibal Story” or Cthulhu’s lawyer? Have I discovered nothing? I have learned my classes, although I could have forgotten them alongside the best way. The lesson of this week’s publish is twofold: Start with characters, at all times. And if at first you don’t succeed, be sincere about what you screwed up and don’t forget to maintain working to get higher. â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans

Career Success And Life Fulfillment What You Can Learn From Tony And Gina

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Career Success and Life Fulfillment: What You Can Learn from Tony and Gina My December column in The Practical Lawyer is titled: Some Practical Thoughts on Conquering Career Burnout. It is based on  two books I co-authored about Tony and Gina Caruso. In Say Ciao to Chow Mein:  Conquering Career Burnout, Christina Bost Seaton and I focused on Tony, who after  finishing his first year as an associate in a large Texas law  firm is burned out and struggling to find meaning in his  career. In Ciao, Gina loves her work as a clerk for a Federal  Court judge. At the conclusion of Ciao, Tony has just been  promoted to partner and he and Gina have two children. In Rising Star: The Making of a Rainmaker, Kristi Sebalj and I focused on Gina. In this book Gina is now a partner in a mid-sized firm. She is the talk of the  firm, having brought in $1 Million of business. Yet, she  feels like a one-hit wonder because her success was a result  of one big case from one big client. I have known and worked with lawyers like Tony and Gina throughout my law career and lawyer coaching career.  Their characters are a composite of lawyers  who have worked for me and lawyers I have been blessed to  coach and mentor.  Many of those lawyers have caused me  to study and examine differences between lawyers who are  successful and happy and lawyers who are not. Interestingly,  many of the people who are truly successful also have a  great personal life and are very family oriented. What does it take? Based on my experience, lawyers who are truly successful and happy: If you have the time, get to know Tony and Gina. You will see some of the same challenges you face and some of the same opportunities you have. As you will see, you can conquer career burnout by following the ideas above.   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

To be perfectly honest, it's exhausting, repetitive and I may be ignoring a decent up-and-comer if their list of references doesn't communicate in my language or get out the aptitudes I have to discover. The Solution: Even however a site may state connect your list of references here, your new name for your list of references is your Cut the Crap (CTC) Candidate Packet. With the previous, the Candidate Packet infers I am giving all that you have to choose me to meet for your position. The main time this Candidate Packet is difficult to use is if the site requires a plain-text list of references. Step by step instructions to Build a CTC Candidate Packet: It is a sandwich of 3 records or areas in a similar document. To rehash, every one of the three segments ought to be in one PDF or one Microsoft WORD document as opposed to joining three separate records. So figure out how to consolidation and match the entirety of the textual styles. Working from the rear of your Candidate Packet to the front: Segment #3: Back page(s): Your list of qualifications. This page is point by point in another blog on my website and in my book Quit wasting time, Get a Job! A New Job Search Process for a New Era and is the greatest development, conveying the Amazing factor I guaranteed. It must be one page, in a table organization with visual cues in each line. It will feature, in a simple to-understand design, the particular reasons why you are the best contender for their position and, in this way, why you ought to be considered for a meeting. When you do your first Candidate Packet, the rest will be simpler. Be that as it may, every one requires significant investment. Also, in my psyche, conveying a Candidate Packet isn't discretionary. As a recruiting supervisor for more than 30 years, and surveying tens or several candidates for each activity, I realize you will just stand out enough to be noticed with the submittal of something world class versus normal.

5 Signs Youre About to Get Fired

5 Signs You're About to Get Fired 5 Signs You're About to Get Fired Have you at any point encountered that restless, sinking feeling that the activity you thought was so immaculate perhaps isn't turning out to be all things considered? On the off chance that the inconvenience comes from your end alone, you likely have the opportunity and opportunity to search for a superior fit. On the off chance that your boss, then again, is the disappointed one, you might not have authority over when or how your stretch in that position will find some conclusion. Professional stability unquestionably isn't an assurance, particularly on the off chance that you aren't staying pertinent in your field and others demonstrate increasingly learned, talented, or solid. While you will most likely be unable to turn around an arrangement to kill you, you surely can mellow the stun by remaining caution and looking for these five indications of your inevitable terminating. 1. Conversations with your administrator are reported. Let's assume you simply had a tense conversation with your administrator about your ongoing exhibition. You leave her office with a moan of help, imagining that you know precisely what to do pushing ahead, and you can eradicate that awkward one-on-one from your brain. Soon thereafter, however, your director catches up with an email laying out what both of you had examined. Caution! The gathering outline is certainly not a nice thought; rather, it is conscious documentation planned for your record. So as to cover their backs and give generous proof, your organization's higher-ups will make certain to clear your path to the exit with a lot of paper evidence of your ruin. Rather than freezing, utilize the email content as your manual for making upgrades and put your everything into rescuing your activity. 2. Your chief follows up on things quicker than you can achieve them. Recollect the extreme discussion you simply had with your director? Rather than decompressing by the water cooler, get splitting on those things you and she talked about. Her assembling a conference with you has flagged your probation, which implies she will presently be checking in more regularly to keep you in line. In this way, audit the subjects secured and pick the most squeezing things as your total must-dos to start chipping away at right away. At the point when you chief unavoidably catches up with you later in the day, she will be searching for critical advancement on those things. Feeling overpowered or that the desires are nonsensical are surefire signs that you probably won't be appropriate for the position. 3. Responsibilities are being pulled from you. The most current recruit moves toward your work area, and you grab a clingy note to write down your espresso request. For reasons unknown, she isn't making a Starbucks run, yet she does, indeed, advise you that your supervisor just requested that her start to lead the pack on the venture you had been placed responsible for. Your cheeks consuming, you wildly look for the venture record and hand it to her without looking. Did your administrator conclude that this task is underneath you and is clearing your plan for progressively significant things? Maybe your director is setting you up for more noteworthy chances; yet, all things considered, the relieving of your burden has the contrary importance. In the event that your assignments are being redirected to different workers, you can expect that your supervisor doesn't think you are prepared to deal with the duties of those jobs effectively. 4. You're not welcome to specific gatherings. As you look through Instagram to slide your way into the post-lunch routine, you notice that colleagues going to the gathering room. Your heart skirts a beat when you pull up your calendar and don't see anything planned. Did your group neglect to welcome you? Possibly they're arranging an unexpected gathering for you? On the off chance that your group is meeting without you, they're likely taking a shot at a venture with a cutoff time that outlasts your residency. Your chief has just decided your termination date, and keeping in mind that your associates likely don't know about why, they have been told to forget about you. Not being incorporated is a solid sign that you are not, at this point necessary and on out. 5. Someone with your title and more experience has been recruited. You show up Monday morning to discover your director accompanying another face around the workplace and making presentations. At long last, someone else to assist the office! Word rapidly spreads that she has a remarkable noteworthy list of qualifications, and when you get tightly to her business card, you find that she has a similar title as you. Did your supervisor understand that you have a lot on your plate and recruit somebody to share the weight? Sadly, organizations once in a while are in such strong budgetary standing that positions can be included without making cuts. The most inconspicuous and, let's face it, out and out hostile signs that your gig is finishing is somebody being welcomed on who shares your title however has more understanding (and, obviously, more compensation) than you. This low blow is your organization's method of saying that the current structure isn't working, and you are, to some extent at any rate, the motivation behind why. It's not close to home it's business. Observing these inconspicuous prompts will assist you with beginning cleaning off that resume sooner instead of later. In any case, ideally rather, you'll recognize the inevitable and get it going.

Summertime - Workology

Summertime Summertime We have had the summer time theme going here at Performance I Create all month long. We have heard from our contributors and some guest bloggers about summer time and what it means to them â€" mostly from the HR view. Summertime For me the seasons have become somewhat blurry. With both of my children out on their own, I don’t have those bright lines and demarcation points like the start of school, the end of school, or spring break anymore, so the seasons sort of blend together for me. However, there is one event now that becomes the defining event of summer for me. That is the SHRM National Conference â€"which I will be attending when this post goes live. The conference is held every year somewhere between Father’s Day and the summer solstice. I have had the good fortune to attend this event five times in the last seven years. I do not want this to be a commercial for the SHRM Annual Conference, but I have to tell you this: If you are in HR and have not attended this event, you need to come at least once and see what is called “ THE BIG SHOW”.     As an HR pro you need to come and see this â€" the sessions, the exhibition hall, the people who run our HR organization, and to meet old friends and make new ones. It is a big deal. BAM! Another other thing that happens for me every year later in summer is this. My home state SHRM event â€" Illinois SHRM. This takes place in August every year.     When this event is over, I know that summer is waning. The two conferences have become bookends of summer for me. Me and my buddy Janine Truitt networking and mucking it up at #SHRM13 in Chicago Although in the end, these events come down to seeing old friends and making new friends. I guess we call that networking. So to summarize my message is this; summertime is about networking in HR! Do it! Here is Dave the HR Czar’s summertime song play list. Summer in the City â€" Loving; Spoonful In the Summer Time â€" Mungo Jerry The Boys of Summer â€" Don Henely Girls in their Summer Clothes â€" Bruce Springsteen All Summer Long â€" Kid Rock Hot Summer Nights Night

You dont need to whip them with an unending progression of rewards, prizes, not so subtle provocations, modest corporate tchotchkies or unimportant honors to get them to perform. What's more, at any rate, theres no chance any of that can ever coordinate the outcomes individuals make when theyre essentially upbeat at work. Subside Block and Peter Koestenbaum put it like this in their great book Freedom and responsibility at work: We at present go about as though individuals are not intrinsically inspired, rather that they go to work every day and hang tight for another person to light their fire. This conviction is regular among administrators and workers the same? It is correct and human for directors to think about the inspiration and spirit of their kin, it is only that they are not the reason for it. Genuine inspiration can just originate from inside yourself throughout everyday life and at work. Objectives that others set up for you, with no respect for your desires can never really rouse, regardless of what disciplines or rewards are held up before you. So: What persuades you at work? What errands do you approach with relish? What parts of your work fill you with vitality and a characteristic want to work superbly? Kindly compose a remark, Id truly prefer to know. The Biggest Secret Obstacle to Your Career - Pathfinder Careers

The Biggest Secret Obstacle to Your Career - Pathfinder Careers The Biggest Secret Obstacle to Your Career Over and over, customers land in my email inbox or are on the telephone conversing with me, agonizingly describing how the activity that they thought was secure was unexpectedly cleared out quickly. What they thought was a projectile evidence organization vocation is out of nowhere gone, and the representative is currently left with dangling, uncertain inquiries: I did everything right, and was a top entertainer How could this occur? The chief and I were best buddies… what turned out badly? Why me? Yet, in all actuality: There is nothing of the sort as professional stability any more. Its everything about employability. Furthermore, the greatest mystery impediment to your vocation lays on a certain something and one thing as it were: How careless right? The individuals who experience the ill effects of being gotten off guard in their profession are normally the ones who have not played a functioning job in dealing with their career. Sure, they have contributed a ton of beneficial things, yet something gave the board delay and made them focus in on the unfortunate representative. That prompts the following inquiry: What have you done to demonstrate that you are not dead wood? That you are a functioning benefactor notwithstanding being a top entertainer? No strategy is altogether projectile confirmation, yet when it comes down to paring down staff, it comes down to a business choice where a business will see who may be transferrable to another office or have exhibited administration or undiscovered vocation resources that may be useful to the organization. Lack of concern has no spot in this plan of action. The idea of updating is turning out to be increasingly more drilled as organizations who have cut their staff down deeply bunch are currently assessing who is forgotten about to figure how to push the organization ahead. In any case, never dread. There IS an approach to beat the impression of a people carelessness. This is a fresh out of the plastic new year and what better time to effectively guide out three territories that can move a businesses conclusion about you. Here are the 3 significant centers you have to focus in on to support your employability remainder with your present boss: 1) Professional turn of events. What sorts of classes, workshops, trainings, and so forth would you be able to take that will sharpen your capacity to carry out your responsibility, and bring back new plans to the organization? A very much prepared workforce is critical to managers settling on staff decrease choices. 2) Affiliations. How are you constructing your connectedness inside the business? What sorts of associations would you be able to join to develop your organization's profile, and watch your industry companions (and rivalry)? 3) Involvement. Where are you exhibiting your administration by chipping in? This is a tricky territory as you need to find some kind of harmony between contributing on a volunteer premise as opposed to not affecting your capacity to carry out your responsibility. Be that as it may, by venturing up, you keep your capacities and name in the spotlight, as opposed to dropping off into indefinite quality. Indicating footing in your vocation by coordinating these three profession drivers, and afterward keeping your supervisor educated about them is basic to showing that you are so fundamental to the association. They may lay off others, yet in the event that you are important to the association by being a functioning supporter, you'll have a superior possibility of enduring being cut out of the organization finance by being put into another zone of the association. What's more, if the incomprehensible ever happens, you can be progressively certain about your pursuit of employment by not being self-satisfied about your profession and taking part in dynamic vocation management. As a result, the chances of another employer recognizing you as top talent and eating you up are exponentially increased.

Dont Make These Body Language Mistakes!

Dont Make These Body Language Mistakes! If certain techniques for acing job interviews are so well-known that you use them almost automatically, the things that you don’t realize you’re doing can cost you that dream job at the final hurdle. Identifying and neutralizing potential errors before the big day can make all the difference if you’re up against strong competition. Your good qualifications count for little if you’re going to treat your interview as a trial, a sparring match, or an over-familiar chat. New research from CareerBuilder has revealed some of the shocking slip-ups that candidates have made while under scrutiny from potential bosses. Even if you’re a talented medium, grabbing the interviewer’s hand and forcing a palm-reading upon them is probably not a good idea â€" it certainly cost one recent interviewee the job! Another sang all her answers to the panel’s question; and what about the candidate that applied lotion to her feet while being questioned? Presumably, it made the defeated walk home a little less painful. But if these are â€" one hopes â€" isolated cases, far more mundane slip-ups are causing much big numbers of people to fail. Over two thirds of the 2,600 hiring and HR managers surveyed said that catching a candidate lying about something is an instant disqualifier; the same number report that a candidate who answers a phone call or text message during an interview will progress no further. Unintentional signals Okay, so most of us agree that those behaviors are a pretty bad idea. But what about the signals that you don’t notice you’re sending? Take your handshake, for example: 22% of employers reckon a weak handshake is one of the worst body language errors a candidate can make. But over-compensate, and you could be equally doomed: another 9% find an overly strong handshake off-putting. If you want to give a good impression in those first moments, try to make sure your handshake is firm, you keep eye contact with the recipient, and you shake three times. Practice with a friend before the big day: hopefully your buddy can help you calibrate the perfect grip. Make it intentional Folded arms are another no-no. Most of the time, you probably don’t realize you’re doing it. Maybe you’re cold, nervous or self-conscious â€" but body language experts agree the message it sends is usually the same: that you are insecure or defensive. And indeed, crossing your arms can make you so. So while folding your arms is not quite the same thing as applying foot lotion, it’s worth making a mental note to establish a confident posture as soon as you find your seat. Keep your hands on your lap or leg. If unfolding your arms makes you prone to wild hand gestures, then clasp your hands together where they’re resting. Don’t stay too stiff â€" but make sure any gestures you use are meaningful. First impressions count Around half of all employers say they know whether a candidate is a good fit for the role within the first five minutes of an interview. When you consider that the application that got you this far has already demonstrated your level of experience and qualifications, it really means that your personality and your body language are key to the interview process. By this stage, you’ve got it all to lose, so make sure you put in some proper practice ahead of time if you want to progress any further. A new infographic from OnStride gather seven of the biggest body language mistakes into one place, explains the problem with them, and offers achievable methods to fix them before you turn up to your interview. Figure it out in advance, and hopefully you will avoid becoming just another human resources statistic. Courtesy of: On Stride

Is Your Personal Brand Delivering An Encore Performance - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Is Your Personal Brand Delivering An Encore Performance - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Yesterday, I had a very long conversation with Robert S. Kaplan about business strategy and today I spoke with Mark Sanborn about how to deliver an encore performance at work, to keep them coming back for more. Mark was more brief, relative to Robert, but both share extremely good quality information for all of you. Why should companies care about delivering an encore performance? If they dont, will they survive in the future, in a world filled with unlimited choices? It isnt just the number of choices available but the quality and value of the offering. More options generally means more competition which makes remarkable products, services and performances stand out from the mass of offerings. What traits do all extraordinary performers have in common? Can you explain why each is important to overall output? What youre asking is the essence of the book. There are shared skills that create a remarkable performance and thats what I address: preparation, practice, performance, polish and dealing with pitfalls. Passion is the fuel that drives this process engine. Passion: The fuel for remarkable performance Prepare: How remarkable performance begins Practice: It won’t make you perfect, but it will make you better Perform: How to engage your audience Polish: Making your performance shine Many workers are happy working 9-5 and delivering results on par with what their companies are demanding. What impact does this have on companies? The corollary of you get what you pay for is you get paid what youre perceived as being worth. While there are a few exceptions to the rule, companies will value and should reward employees who go beyond basic expectations. The value-creators are those who rise in an enlightened organization. Why do companies need to start focusing on building their talent from within? Engaging the people on the team is what gets them excited and committed about their work and their customers. Developing latent talent is the best way to increase organizational capacity. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh014NJ-lHQ] What are a few tactics for achieving an encore performance? What will make people talk about you for time to come? Knowing more about your product or service and your customer than anybody else is a good starting point. The more you know about your clientwhat he or she likes, values, desires, etc.the greater the opportunity you have to provide personalized attention. - Mark Sanborn, CSP, CPAE, is president of Sanborn Associates, Inc., an idea studio dedicated to developing leaders in business and in life. Mark is an international bestselling author and noted authority on leadership, team building, customer service and change. His latest book is called, The Encore Effect: How to Achieve Remarkable Performance in Anything You Do. Mark holds the Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association (NSA) and is a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame. Mind The Gap Dont Let Missing Work Experience Hamper Your Career

Mind The Gap Dont Let Missing Work Experience Hamper Your Career Do you have any gaps in your resume? Im talking about the big, red-flag kind of gaps. Maybe your resume gap is due to unexpected downsizing, extended travel, or health  family issues. Having a resume gap  can be quite common, especially these days. Theyre not as eyebrow-raising as they used to be, but you still  have to be accountable for them. Prospective employers want to know what was going on behind the scenes. As a job seeker, you will have to answer this question. So be prepared. How do you deal with it? Here’s how. Be Honest It’s essential to be honest. There is no point in telling a lie; bluffing your way is not an option. The risk is high if a hiring manager sees straight through you. Explain the  circumstance that led to the compulsive gap on your resume, with no excuses. In the words of James Caan, serial entrepreneur Personally, I am always more interested in the abilities and characteristics of an individual if they havent been in work for a while but have the quality my company needs, I will hire them. Think Outside the Box If youre currently between jobs and worry that it might lead to a lengthy gap in your resume, consider performing  some volunteering work. Non-profits are always seeking volunteers, and you never know who youll meet while on a project. You could learn of a new opportunity while donating your time. And even if you dont, your volunteer gig closes that resume gap nicely. Even if youre seeking a structured, full-time job to replace your old one, doing  contract or part-time work can minimize or close entirely  a resume gap. Freelance work is available in a variety of industries via sites like  ODesk, Elance, Vworker, Freelancer.com and Guru. Focus On  Your New Skills Some people tend to think that schools, colleges and office spaces are the only places where learning takes place. Well, this is definitely not true. Let’s take an example. Maybe you took time off from your work in order to travel and write. In such a scenario, you learned  how to deal with hardships, coping with  different people from various cultures and backgrounds. Such an experience enhances your tolerance, and your abilities to deal with different types of people and make you more culturally sound. This kind of an experience can be useful for any business, global or local. Or let’s consider another situation where you have taken time off in order to raise your children. You are bound to have sharpened skills like organization, multitasking and discipline. Try and make the hiring manager aware of all your skills; justify how relevant are they in your new job and how can you actually apply them. Reflect and Skew Positively Maybe you took time off to explore your options, start a business, or pursue your passion. But it failed, and youre headed back to a real job. No worries in explaining this one. What did you learn? Ponder over how this can help you in your present times and your future job. How did this “gap period” help you? What challenges did you face? How have you grown? Reflect on questions like  these, be sincere in your responses, and practice to ensure you  sound natural and confident about shifting gears again. Let Your Talents Be Your Guide Fortunately, in our  current economic  job markets, the focus lies more on finding the right kind of talent for the job at hand. So, even though you might feel concern about your resume gap, sometimes they arent as big  an issue as you expect them to be. In these cases, as long as your resume reflects a strong skillset for the position, you have a positive attitude, and are proactive in your approach, a gap in resume isnt the red flag that it used to be. If I could start my university time again, I would have done things differently advice on summer internships from a recent graduate. University of Manchester Careers Blog

If I could start my university time again, I would have done things differently’ advice on summer internships from a recent graduate. University of Manchester Careers Blog If you are still unsure on applying for summer internships for next summer, here are some words of advice from a recent University of Manchester graduate Justin Colver on why he values internships, what he would have done differently and how he thinks internships can benefit you in finding future jobs. “I didnt apply for internships in either first or second year and I wish I had. The reason wasnt just laziness, it was because I neither knew what I wanted to do, nor thought I stood a chance of being successful, especially as I thought I would be looking at the big 4 accountancy firms.” Career ‘inertia’ is a real danger which can occur when you have lots of options and aren’t sure which to choose, or perhaps think it’s best to wait to see what happens â€" things will become clearer later on, won’t they? Well, not in Justin’s experience. Often you have to just try things to see what you really enjoy. “It really doesnt matter if you have no idea what you want to do, just try and get [some] sort of internship sorted out. Even if you dont think your CV is strong enough for the big firms, try to get an internship with another firm, even if it isnt particularly the field you wanted to enter. You may find you enjoy that line of work, and you also become aware of the different types of jobs there are out there.” Although he was only aware of accountancy jobs at the time, looking back he would have loved to have done an internship in other areas including ‘marketing, communications, HR, Procurement etc’. It’s surprising how many students only apply to the biggest firms or get deterred by the competition. The Careers Service deals with a lot of smaller businesses too, great opportunities where you may not face the same competition to get an internship. In his second year, Justin says that he didn’t realise that there were so many ‘easier yet still great alternatives’. From Justin’s experience to have an internship in any area of business would help for future applications for graduate programmes. With professional experience you can demonstrate to employers that you developed relevant transferable skills for their role. And remember, your pre-final year is when a lot of organisations open their doors for summer internships â€" miss this opportunity and you may not get another chance to put that great bit of experience on your CV! In Justin’s words this is what he has learnt about internships: It is a necessity for many employers and shows that you are motivated They are very useful for many questions which are asked at interview such as when you are working in a team etc They [internships] are a good time to see what actually goes on in the workplace and should help people get an idea of what they want to do. If you need any information and advice on compiling your CV, covering letter or application for an internship see our Career Service Starting Point guides online or to pick up in person from the Careers Resource Centre, and get further advice when you have tailored your internship application through the Quick Query service.
