Personality power How you present yourself at work
Personality power How you present yourself at workPersonality power How you present yourself at workSelf-Assessment Quiz - TRUE or FALSEIf I want to be taken seriously at work, Id better be serious at all times.Earning trust from my fellow coworkers has nothing to do with how I present myself emotionally day-to-day.Im aware of how my personality affects those I work with. When things get out of hand in life, you know its time for a reality check, but when was the last time you took a personality check at work? I was chatting with a colleague the other day, and we came to the topic of what our own work personality is like. Then we examined some of those who worked for us. Now, we both agreed that a great personality can go a long way on the job. Generally, most people prefer to work with an upbeat person mora than a sourpuss. However, I made the point that youve gotta have a great personality that is combined with hard workandsolid output. Otherwise, whats the point? An employee can be dumb as a doorknob and get nothing done. Personality will not save that person at work. You can wow with personality, but you can only get so far with a dazzling wit. I had one employee who sorta drove me crazy because she was overly bubbly. My impression of her was that she was someone who was trying too darn hard She reminded me of a puppy. She was all over the place AND wasnt really getting the job done but was just as happy as she could be Im here to tell you yes, be professionally happy and positive, but dont hang your star on your winning personality alone. Work and work hardMy colleague brought up a time early in her career where shed made a huge mistake on a project, and she apologized to her boss with a bit of a smile which prompted a chewing out that included the boss pretty much yelling at her, Do you understand the severity of what youve done? She totally had My colleague says that she used her smile back then as a shield because she knew that if she showed her real f eelings (embarrassment, anger) and how incredibly upset she was at makinganykind of mistake, she would cry in front of her boss, and that wasnt what she wanted to do at all She learned that she had to balance herbubblywith a bit ofgravityin order to be taken seriously. If you are one of those bubbly people who smile a lot at work, be aware of how youre presenting yourself. Im not saying you should become a Debbie No-Smile Downer. What I am saying is make sure your personality power is tempered for the environment of your job and that you come across as someone professional and trustworthy and not like a wind-up toy. If youre not sure, set some time with your boss. Ask away. Shell appreciate that youre taking the time and showing concern about your professionalism. If your boss aint got time for that, pull a coworker aside (someone you trust) and ask him or her for feedback. Youll be happy you did. And if you answered FALSE to all of the self-assessment questions above, now might be t he time for a personality rebootCheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor youve always needed in your life. Learn About Dog Groomer Professional Certification
Learn About Dog Groomer Professional CertificationLearn About Dog Groomer Professional CertificationWhile professional certification is not a requirement for dog groomers to enter the field, there are several certification vorkaufsrechts that can further enhance a groomers credentials and earning potential. Here are some of the top canine organizations that offer professional certification options for dog groomers International Professional Groomers Inc. International Professional Groomers Inc. (IPG) is a worldwide organization that certifies individual groomers and also offers accreditation to grooming schools, grooming salons, and mobile grooming salons. Groomers can pursue two certification options with IPG the International Certified Master Groomer (ICMG) program, which offers five modules and the Advanced Professional Groomer Certification (APG) program, which teaches advanced skills for shape, style, and symmetry. The total cost for the ICMG program is $785 and $297 for the APG program. The International Certified Master Groomer (ICMG) option, also referred to as breed profile certification, involves a variety of written and practical tests that must be completed within a five-year period. Testing is based on the standard of excellence for the breed (using AKC standards in the United States and corresponding organizations in other countries). International Society of Canine Cosmetologists The International Society of Canine Cosmetologists (ISCC) is a global organization that certifies dog groomers through a combination of written and practical skills examinations. Testing is offered at all ISCC educational events, some major shows where ISCC has a booth, and through local proctor services in the applicants hometown. The program involves multiple levels of certification. Practical exams involve styling sporting, non-sporting, and terrier breeds. Most tests cost from $50 to $150 each, though the final two tests (300-level thesis and styling presenta tion) are billed at a cost of $1,000 and $1,500 respectively. National Dog Groomers Association of America, Inc. The National Dog Groomers Association of America, Inc (NDGAA) is a professional association that offers certification through its National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG) program. The NCMG certification involves a variety of written and practical skills tests for several breed groups. The practical skills tests include the grooming of non-sporting breeds, sporting breeds, long-legged terriers, and short-legged terriers. Written exams include non-sporting, sporting, and terrier groups and are based on AKC standards. The final phase is the 400 question National Certified Master Groomer Exam that covers other groups (working, toy, and hound) as well as general terminology, health care, pesticides, clipper identification, and even some cat questions. The testing fee is $125 per breed group exam (including both the written and practical elements of the testing). The Master exam also costs $125 and can only be scheduled after all prerequisite exams have been successfully completed. Once achieved, the NCMG professional certification must be renewed each year at a cost of $50. International Certifications There are also several dog grooming certification options that are available only in specific countries, such as the City Guilds accredited qualifications for dog groomers in the United Kingdom or the Higher Diploma in Dog Grooming offered by the British Dog Groomers Association. Other Options The reputation of a dog groomer can also be enhanced by the completion of an intensive practical training course at a professional grooming school. Grooming schools generally provide several hundred hours of training before a student is awarded a certificate of completion. The length of the training may be condensed into several weeks or several months, depending on the individual program. The school may also be able to assist with networking, internship s, and job placement after graduation. Another option is to take an apprenticeship with a well known experienced groomer or grooming salon. This practical approach does not result in a certificate per se, but a student can gain valuable hands-on experience and perhaps also benefit from the reputation and connections of their supervisor.

How to Keep Learning Without Making a Big Effort - The Muse
How to Keep Learning Without Making a Big Effort - The MuseHow to Keep Learning Without Making a Big Effort I genuinely enjoy learning, and years ago when I first moved to NYC and intensely believed that there was a serious gap in my education- Id never taken an art history class- I signed up for a continuing education course at NYU. Truthfully, though, I can tell you little about what I retained, much as I enjoyed the class at the time. Im now on the schools mailing list, but typically emails go unread. This isnt because I dont still have a thirst for learning new things though rather, its that I dont have the energy (or money) to invest in this particular type of learning, which in the end wasnt so much about upping my intelligence as it was about memorizing artists, periods, and important works. The learning I desire to do now is less specific. Ive always been drawn to smart people and notice when people use big words when theyre not trying to be ostentatious (see what I did there? ). Seriously though, one of the things I love about my husband is his awesome vocabulary, which, full disclosure, is a bit better than mine. Many companies offer professional development courses and understand our desire to stay on our toes and grow outside of the area were super specialized in. And while I commend those initiatives, some of those classes still require a significant amount of time, effort, and energy. There may be a period where Im ready to invest in that, but that time is not now. If youre like me and have a thirst for getting smarter but either dont have company-funded courses at your disposal or the drive to devote to them, you can still score IQ points. For all of us who endeavor to keep on learning long after graduating college, there are literally dozens of things you can do- many of them from the comfort of your very own couch. Here are 10 of my partal favorites.1. Do Crossword PuzzlesIm still a long way from The New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle, but th ats OK because each day the paper has a short puzzle that you can fill out angeschlossen as youre timed. 2. Read Outside Your InterestsEasier said than done, I realize. One of the sheer joys of reading is pursuing that which we find intriguing based on personal choice. Required reading is so high school. But the thing about exploring subjects outside your comfort zone is that it can help you discover new interests, and once you start going down that new rabbit hole, who knows what other things will open up.3. Look Up Words You Dont KnowIf Im reading a book or an article and come across a word I dont know the meaning of, Ill typically look up its definition- this is obviously super easy when Im reading something on a screen and have internet access. But, have you ever been in conversation with someone and heard a word you didnt know and couldnt figure out through context? Dont just make a mental note to check it later follow through and look it up. Bonus points if you find a way to u se it in a sentence the following week.4. Make a Point to Talk to Smart PeopleThis one is so obvious, and yet how many of us go out of our way to do it? Seeking out intelligent people and chatting them up can be eye-opening. Im always drawn to people who are really good at what they do, and if I meet someone involved in something I know nothing about, Im intrigued and inclined to ask a lot of questions, without fearing that my inquiries are too basic or stupid. Which leads me to my next tip5. Ask All the QuestionsIm sure Im far from the first person to tell you that there are no stupid questions, but seriously, how many times have you nodded along and pretended to understand something because you didnt want to seem unknowledgeable or out of the loop? This is silly. Anyone who makes you feel badly for asking a question for clarity or to gain more insight isnt someone you want to be talking to for long, anyway.6. Get Outside Your Comfort ZoneWatch a documentary if all you watch are in die films. Try a comedy on Netflix if you only ever watch historical dramas. Go see the latest Marvel comic movie and let your viewing partner explain the history of Marvel and DC Comics to you. Read a book of contemporary short stories if John Grisham novels are your go-to. It doesnt matter what you do to branch out- its the branching out and stretching your mind that matters here.7. Alter Your RoutineHaving a dedicated daily plan can be great, but it can also get tedious, and a bored mind isnt one thats gaining intelligence, I can tell you that much. Lifehacker writer Eric Ravenscraft supports this idea, explaining that switching things up coaxes your brain into thinking more creatively about your workflow. Try a new food, listen to that new artist, and abandon your Sunday errands. You can stick to your preferences, but venturing out and mixing up the order in which you do things and how you do them may have a powerful impact on your brain and, consequently, the way in which you c ontribute to the conversation.8. Create SomethingBreakfast for dinner. A hand-written card. A personal website. A bookshelf (even if its just via Ikea instructions). Try something you wouldnt normally do that falls under the creative spectrum (so many things do, youd be surprised), and feel accomplished. 9. Listen to a PodcastFrom nuanced political discussions (Pantsuit Politics), to foodie-focused options (Bon Appetit), to relationship advice platforms (Dear Sugar), theres a podcast for you no matter what youre into. Listen on your commute to work, while youre walking the dog, or washing the dishes and find yourself learning without even trying. 10. Subscribe to NewslettersWant to know the great thing about getting those newsletters delivered straight to your inbox? It takes the work out of finding awesome stuff to read online, of which there is certainly no shortage. Choose sites youre extremely excited about and ones youre mildly interested in and then read at your leisure or don t, depending on what gets your attention. You dont need to go big or go home when it comes to learning. Its an ongoing process. Education can show up in a conversation, a TV review, a novel. The key to it, I think, is not to put pressure on yourself. If you wake up and vow to learn three new things today, you might be disappointed in yourself if it doesnt happen the way you planned. If I start reading a New Yorker article about the Dutch landscape architect whos reinventing green spaces or parks with the intention of really gaining new knowledge, Im probably going to dislike the article or feel as though Im being forced to read it and get something out of it. But if I approach it simply with an open mind- hmm, this isnt a topic that usually grabs my attention- Im likely to finish it, feeling like I learned something I didnt know before. Be open to seemingly small educational opportunities, and watch how much smarter youll feel.Photo of woman reading a magazine courtesy of Yagi Studio /Getty Images.

Get Emotional Cultivating an Intelligent Workplace [Part 1]
Get Emotional Cultivating an Intelligent Workplace Part 1 We all know that the success of any company depends on the productivity of its workers. And productive workers need to be led by people who understand the who, what, when, where and how-to of customer demand. Entering from stage left intelligence. Along with an intelligent management team, productive workers also need leaders who, wellget it. Employees need managers and supervisors who understand their wants and needs elend only as workers, but as human beings. They need people who understand and recognize their emotions and who are capable of effectively managing those feelings. Entering from stage right emotional.Combine the two and whats left at center stage? Emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence is not only important for our careers, but it is beneficial to our personal well-being. From consultants and entrepreneurs to professo rs and authors, check out what a few industry experts had to say about how you can understand, cultivate and ultimately benefit from emotional intelligence in the workplaceWhat is emotional intelligence?Emotional intelligence is simply the capacity to recognize and understand the emotions of others and oneself and the capability to manage the emotions of others and oneself. In the workplace, high emotional intelligence is the quickest way to increase revenue and profits. The greater the capacity and capability to demonstrate emotional intelligence, the greater the rewards will flow to your organization.Leanne Hoagland-Smith, CRO Heurist, ADVANCED SYSTEMSEmotional intelligence is what allows you to influence the people around you. It is the foundation of conflict management, adaptability and teamwork. Clearly there is an expectation that an employee is aware of and in control of their emotions in the workplace, but I think it goes much further as a success factor in the workplace. To succeed in business these days, most positions require an ability to work with a teamsometimes as a leader and sometimes as a contributor. Knowing how to effectively work in team, manage the conflicts, meet deadlines, keep all members engaged, etc. is critical to success in many organizations.Lynne Sarikas, Executive Director of the MBA Career Center, DAmore-McKim School of Busines, Northeastern UniversityWhy is emotional intelligence important in the workplace?Emotional intelligence is important in the workplace because humans by definition are emotional beings. We all react differently to certain situations, and any effective manager must be cognizant (and be able to deal with) the emotional reactions of his or her staff members. Its also important that you have your own emotions firmly under control. If not, youll lack the credibility you need with your staff in order for them to view you as an effective leader.David Bakke, Editor, Money Crashers Personal FinanceThe workplace is a network of relationships in which purpose is created, commitments are designed and managed, and in which trust is foundational. How we respond to the inevitable disappointments, failures, and achievements along the way is a measure of our emotional intelligence.Workers at every level need the skills, i.e., emotional intelligence, to manage their reactions to workplace and work-related events. When they do this, they manage their relationships with co-workers at all levels of authority.Foundational to all this is the ability to cultivate a workplace environment that encourages openness openness naturally produces productive conversations that lead to better coordination, collaboration and greater trust. All companies aspire to create the kind of morale that spurs creative ideas and authentic commitments to realize those ideas. And, this is a very attainable goal for those corporate cultures that value and validate authenticity and trustproviding fertile ground for the development of social and emotional intelligence. In effect, employees with high social and emotional IQs are as important to the companys bottom line as they are to the quality of work-life.Dr. Peter Yaholkovsky, Business consultant, Coach, LifeScape LLCHow can employers develop and strengthen their emotional intelligence capabilities?departure with knowing yourself. It is best to use a mentor or coach to do that, since we are terrible students of ourselves. I believe strongly that you cannot adopt new behaviors unless the underlying beliefs are clear, so dont expect a seminar or workshop to do the work you have to do within yourself to understand what your emotions are saying. Next, pay attention to people who seem to have that knack of being comfortable around people and easily draw people to them, and model that style. Last, seek feedback, including from people who you feel may not like you or trust you.Paul Heagen, Executive Coach and Author of The Leaders ClimbYou cannot lead a progressive, informed life without this. We spend too much time on other peoples business and little on our own growth and development. Emotional intelligence, how you handle your own feelings, how well you empathize and get along with other people is an essential human proficiency. Children, even small ones, who learn to manage their emotions, do better in all areas including education and their social life. They focus and learn better. It allows them to be smarter. We need to continue to practice these skills into adulthoodJoyce Mikal-Flynn, Associate Professor, Sacramento State UniversityStayed tuned to see what our experts had to say on the benefits of social intelligence in part 2 of this article.
